The historical roots of Shiatsu
We have already described some of the benefits that shiatsu can have for our body and mind balance, but it is also important to spend a few lines on the history of this practice of bodily manipulation and the tradition from which it develops.
The history of Traditional Chinese Medicine unfolds over millennia, during times when the root of their treatment practices were based on nutrition, various herbs and medicinal remedies, and acupuncture. And it is because of the latter that we have started practicing shiatsu, as the system of meridians and points coded by the therapists of the time has laid the groundwork for various manual practices without the use of needles.
The closest relative of shiatsu is perhaps the Tuinà massage, of Chinese origin, which is based on a kind of acupressure that is similar to the one used in shiatsu.
These ancient practices then arrived in Japan, where they distinguished various schools and philosophies of thought dictated by teachers such as Namikoshi or Masunaga, who then exported the shiatsu as we know it today in the West.
